Nuova ICOM deploys new Grove GRT8120 for industrial plant build at major Italian seaport

  • The company is a big fan of Grove, with the majority of its fleet from the brand.
  • The GRT8120 will help construct a new industrial plant to build sections for a gas pipeline in Norway.

Italian industrial company Nuova ICOM has sent its new Grove GRT8120 rough-terrain crane straight to work on the construction of a manufacturing plant at the Porto Canale of Cagliari, Sardinia. Building work began in September last year, and the company received its new Grove GRT8120 in February this year to support construction.

Nuova ICOM is a committed user of Grove mobile cranes, with the majority of its cranes coming from the brand. All its Grove cranes are sold and supported via Manitech, a subsidiary of Italian Grove dealer FIMI, and a long-standing Nuova ICOM partner.

“We love the performance we get with the Grove GRT8120. A 60 m boom and a maximum tip height of 80.8 m, from a crane with 120 t capacity – and all that on just two axles. It’s so versatile in terms of set-up, operating height, and lift capacity. Plus, we get all the benefits of a Grove GRT in terms of reliability and maneuverability,” said Alessandro Calledda, general manager at Nuova ICOM.

Grove GRT8120

Grove’s GRT8120 is the market leader in two-axle rough-terrain crane performance. As well as a huge lifting capability, the crane has a seven-section, 60 m MEGAFORM® boom, with up to 80.8 m of tip height when using the jib. A wider, full-vision cab with 20° tilt maximizes comfort and visibility, and the operator further benefits from Manitowoc’s Crane Control System (CCS) which includes a boom configurator mode for easier set-up and on-board lift planning.

The crane for Nuova ICOM is helping build the company’s new 200,000 sq. m production site for pipeline sections. The factory’s first order is for 85 km of heavy-duty pipeline for a gas pipeline in Norway located inside the Arctic Circle. The crane will help build the new plant and once complete it will remain on site to handle completed pipe sections for shipping to customers.

Nuova ICOM, headquartered in Caliari, Sardinia, is a leading company in the design, construction, and maintenance of industrial plants.
