EnCORE™ in Brazil rebuilds Manitowoc 4000W for Odebrecht
A 38-year-old Manitowoc lattice-boom crawler crane was recently given a second life. The Manitowoc 4000W had been used in Brazil for decades working at Estaleiro Paraguaçu a shipyard in the city of Salvador.
EnCORE™ is the business name for the remanufacturing services provided by Manitowoc Crane Care. Manitowoc’s manufacturing facility in Passo Fundo Brazil also hosts EnCORE™ services for the region and rebuilt the crane for Odebrecht a long-standing Manitowoc customer.
Odebrecht wished to keep their 4000W in service thanks to several of its features including its freefall system which is used for pile-driving operations. The company also valued the crane’s easy maintenance and familiar mechanisms.
The refurbishment cost 75 percent less than purchasing a new crane saving Odebrecht a significant amount of money. The upgrade project took six months to complete.
Rodrigo Stefanini senior manager of EnCORE™ in Latin America said the project to rebuild the crane was a great help to Odebrecht as it not only saved the company money but enabled them to keep a crane that ideally served their scope of business.
“We were able to completely rebuild the Manitowoc 4000W for Odebrecht restoring this solid reliable crane and hopefully giving it another 38 years of dependable service ” he said.
EnCORE™’s work on the crane included:
- Dissassembly of the machine and inspection
- Installation of new components - Structural repairs
- A remanufactured boom hoist - Refurbished travel loc
- Newly rebuilt main drive shaft including new clutches and bearings
- A new roof completely rebuilt and designed with new plates and reinforcements
- Chassis completely inspected corrosion neutralized and painted
- Engine exchanged for a new Cummins model also a new support plate was installed
Odebrecht took delivery of the refurbished machine in September and it was fully tested and certified to work at the pier again. The crane’s sparkling new red paint job reflected the machine’s new life.
“It’s always a great pleasure to serve such an important customer by saving them time money and peace of mind ” Stefanini said. “Odebrecht found great use out of this Manitowoc 4000W which is no surprise because it’s a great crane and now the company will be able to use it for many more years to come.”
Odebrecht Group was founded in 1944 by Norberto Odebrecht. Since then the company has grown to provide engineering and construction services throughout South America the United States Angola Portugal and the Middle East. The 69-year-old company is headquartered in Salvador Brazil and proudly operates in 24 countries on three continents.
